Happy Wednesday to you! It’s May 9th, and you know what that means. There is a brand spanking new release at Concord & 9th today, and it is AMAZING! There must be something in the water over at Concord & 9th headquarters. I do not know how they continue to blow us away every single month.
Our new challenge starts today at Where Creativity Meets C9, and it’s all about the florals. Perfect time for me to use the Painted Rose from last month’s release.
I am not a watercoloring expert. Do not act surprised by this, but I do want to do it more often so that I can go from pre-beginner to advanced beginner. So I thought I’d try to “relax” and play with this stamp set. Here’s what I did to make this card:
- I used the Sketched Stripes stamp and distress inks to make the background. When I inked the stamp I made sure to wipe off the one corner with a baby wipe before stamping both horizontally and vertically.
- Let’s not pretend that this wasn’t a goof, but I used crushed olive on the vertical stripes and shabby shutters on the horizontal stripes. I meant to use shabby shutters for both, but, ahem, mistakes are made. We are all human, and I did not want to waste a piece of watercolor paper.
- After the stripes were stamped in both directions I used a damp paint brush and ran it over all of the stripes. I wanted to make those lines less defined, and sort of mute the colors. I anticipated that this might be a wonky card, so I had decided early on to “embrace the wonk”.
- I stamped the Painted Rose in the open corner using a light color of distress ink. I was going for a no-line watercoloring technique.
- Using three shades of distress inks in purples I colored the rose, and then used a green and a blue for the leaves.
- I did a light wash of Evergreen Bough around the flower to have it blend into the background a bit.
- Since I mailed this to my mother as a Mother’s Day card, I used the “it’s your day” sentiment from the Floral Turnaround stamp set. I love that set and those sentiments. I may as well keep it out on my desk full time. I recommend you do the same.
- I embossed that sentiment on vellum, adhered that to a piece of black cardstock, and then adhered that to the card front, sticking with the wonky theme. There was no way my lines were all going to line up, so, say it with me… I embraced the wonk. 😉
I hope you are inspired to play along with us this month. I absolutely know that you have some florals from Concord & 9th, and if you don’t, you need to fix that straight away!
