I’ve started a new hobby. About 18 months ago I decided I’d like to learn to sew. While I have had sewing machines over the years, I have a tendency to break them. I think it’s got something to do with the fact that I also break watches? I learned that I inherited this trait from my grandmother! She’s a witch, Harry! 😉 So, I got a new sewing machine, a fancy one, and haven’t looked back. Her name is Beverly. She’s an Aria.
I started by making little cosmetic squares, sort of a reusable cotton pad. For skin care products. I progressed to potholders, then a jelly roll rug, and then pillows. Next was a quilt that was fairly simple, all straight lines and rectangles. Second quilt is this one. It’s called the Calippo Quilt and it comes from Free Bird Quilt Designs in Australia.
There is a quilt shop near my sister and we went browsing in December of 2021. She saw this pattern, loved it, and asked if I could make it. I said yes. If there is anything I’m good at, it’s reading, and figured if there was a pattern, I could follow it. About a year later I finally started working on it. Once I asked a million questions of my friend Mary Dawn, I was able to do this. And it’s awesome. Quilting is very much like card making. Lots of pretty papers and patterns translate to lots of pretty fabrics and patterns. Cut them up, glue them together becomes cut them up and sew them together. Honestly, it’s very very similar.
I’m just putting this up on the blog so that I don’t forget about it. I need a Ravelry for quilting. Does that exist?
